Suppose you felt trapped in an unhappy marriage. Suppose you saw this ad in a newspaper...
"Have you ever wished your loved one could be kidnapped by aliens? Call 1-800-GOODBYE for more information. No salesmen will call."
If you're Guy Collier, well-meaning but luckless tech writer for a big Los Angeles software company, you might just pick up the phone and call. But that might only be the begining of your problems.
"Kidnapped by Aliens!" was originally published in June 1995 in Tomorrow SF, edited by Algis Budrys. It includes an essay by the authors, "Writing (and Rewriting) Kidnapped by Aliens!" which you can also read on Bridget McKenna's blog.

More Amazing Stories

My story "Perchance to Dream" appeared in More Amazing Stories, the Amazing Stories anthology edited by Kim Mohan and published by Tor in 2001.
"Perchance" is what my friend Eric referred to as my "baby-in-a-box" story. It was inspired by a dream I had about a baby who slept in a box. You weren't allowed to wake her up--she just slept there day after day. In the dream I woke her up and felt a combination of joy and fear.
In my story, a mother sits in a nursery watching her baby boy sleep. Today is his birthday and she will wake him for one hour before she must put him back in the sleep chamber that keeps him from aging while she grows older and more desperate for a life with her son.

Tomorrow Speculative Fiction

"Kidnapped by Aliens!" is a collaboration with my mother, Bridget McKenna. It appeared in issue #15 of Tomorrow published in June of 1995. This was my first short story sale and receiving my contributor's copy of issue #15 was a huge thrill. Tomorrow was edited by the late Algis Budrys, a wonderful man who made many contributions to the SF/F field.
"Kidnapped" was inspired by a conversation Mom and I had wherein we (unkindly) wished that someone would be kidnapped by aliens. In our story, a man in an unhappy marriage answers an ad and arranges to have his unbearable wife removed to a world far away.
"Kidnapped" will be available soon in electronic formats. Watch this space for news.

Current Projects

Tiny People!
I'm currently working on a young adult fantasy novel about a homeless girl in Seattle who finds a city of tiny people living next door to her squat.
Since I was a child, I've been fascinated with the idea of tiny people living among us. This book has been a lot of fun to work on. I hope to finish it by the end of 2011.
